Consulting Firm Walks the Talk with Design of Its Energy - Efficient Offices
- Editorial Written by Frances Stewart

DESIGNING a new office space was a case of practising what it preached for Lucid Consulting Engineers.  The firm – which specialises in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and fire services for the commercial construction sector – relocated to Kent Town late last year once staff numbers grew to more than 40.  Company director Anthony Di Marzo said the design and fit-out of the space reflected the company’s advice to clients. ‘‘This office space incorporates a number of sustainable design features that showcase Lucid’s ability to identify and realise cost-effective ways of saving energy and minimising material wastage,’’ he said.  ‘‘Our new office is a key part of Lucid’s ongoing strategy to continue to be a leader in the building services consulting engineering industry.’’ Key features of the office include:

REDUCED north oriented glazing and overhangs, which allow winter solar penetration while reducing summer heat.

OPTIMISED natural daylight through south-oriented roof lights.

MAXIMISED natural crossventilation.

AUTOMATED natural ventilation that links to the airconditioning system, switching it off and opening windows when external conditions are suitable.

LIGHTS dim automatically when sufficient daylight is available.

ALL systems are connected to a centralised control system that automatically shuts off when the security system is armed.

ROOF rainwater is captured for use in toilet flushing.

Mr Di Marzo says the space ‘‘is not just another sustainable office project’’. ‘‘It is a real example of simple, cost-effective sustainability,’’ he said. The company was also involved in delivering the largest solar panel installation in the southern hemisphere at Adelaide Showground and a grid-embedded Co-Generation system at the Conservatory on Hindmarsh building, which utilises natural gas to simultaneously produce power and heat for the building.
