This project features a range of sustainable design features. Early feedback on passive building design principles including building thermal modelling and analysis enabled the building envelope design to be optimised and resolved at the outset of the project. Glazing, shading and thermal mass options were compared and assessed to enable an optimised "whole of project" building envelope and air conditioning design combination.
The result is a reasonably conventional and cost effective air conditioning system applied to a building envelope which performs well across all seasons, with some innovative features such as fully modulating outside air rates based on outside conditions and occupancy. Night purge cycles cool the buildings thermal mass on cool summer nights and outside air is drawn from a cool 'living wall' area.
The building achieves outstanding energy efficiency without significant capital cost premiums. |
