Botanic Gardens - Waterlily Pavilion, Victoria Building

increase decrease
hindmarsh square hotel/apartment development

This project involved
design and construction of
a new glasshouse pavilion, including environmental controls, to house the

historically significant Amazon Waterlily pond

in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Lucid’s involvement included the design of heating plant for the pavilion and passive cooling systems as well as the swamp water.

The heating source is a natural gas fired boiler which provides warm water to 2 heating loops - one within the pond and another around the pavilion. The pipework material for the heating loops was selected via a process of assessment of various different materials based upon their heat transfer properties, corrosion resistance and cost. The heating process takes advantage of the natural convection cycles within both the pond and the pavilion to maximize heat transfer from the pipes. The heat output of each loop is automatically controlled via DDC controllers reading from multiple averaging temperature sensors and driving modulating valves open and closed to match capacity to load as required. The boiler burn rate and pump speed both modulate to match the load thus minimizing energy wastage.

The passive cooling system was also optimised in conjunction with the design team to achieve a cost effective combination of automatic louvers which open during regular warm conditions and back-up exhaust fans which operate in extreme conditions.
