Sustainability

increase decrease
The importance of energy efficiency in the building industry has increased significantly over the years, to the point now that the Building Code of Australia has now introduced energy performance requirements for all classifications of buildings. Regardless of legislative requirements, the benefits of ecologically sustainable development (ESD) extend to long term energy cost savings as well as a public perception of environmental responsibility.

Lucid Consulting Engineers aims to provide our clients with the best possible opportunities to achieve ESD outcomes within their projects. We have personnel accredited under the "ABGR" and "Green Star" scheme s and are dedicated to ongoing training of our staff in all aspects of energy assessment and energy efficient design. We have undertaken a number of projects involving calculation and prediction of energy and water consumption with results of energy consumption calculations utilised as input data to recognised building rating tools including ABGR and Green Star.

In general, our approach to selection of the appropriate building services systems for each project would include cost benefit analysis for major system components, whereby capital cost, operating costs (maintenance and energy) and other factors (such as carbon credits, tonnes of equivalent greenhouse gas emissions) are all taken into consideration.

Environmental Policy

Mission Statement

As designers of building services solutions, Lucid is ideally positioned to produce tangible environmental benefits on behalf of our clients and for the community generally. We therefore maintain a culture built on delivery of outstanding building services project outcomes to provide our clients with buildings and systems which generate minimal adverse environmental impacts, whilst maximising value and quality of the internal environment, and minimising our own environmental impacts in the process of project delivery. The ways in which we maintain this culture include:

Design Solutions

  • Generate cost effective design concepts and solutions which result in minimal greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water consumption, natural resource depletion, waste to landfill and pollution.
  • Approach each project with a holistic and open minded attitude to enable early engagement between disciplines and optimised ‘whole project’ outcomes, combining passive and active energy saving measures.
  • Consider the specific details and unique features of each project and individual needs and usage patterns of its occupants to ensure that design solutions are appropriate and benefits are maximised.
  • Demonstrate that sustainable design solutions can be accessible and affordable to any project by identifying the best value sustainable opportunities.
  • Deliver building designs which provide enhanced spaces for occupants through consideration of daylight, comfort, glare, internal air quality and connectivity to nature.
  • Provide our staff with the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to deliver practical environmental solutions through a strong commitment to recruitment, retention and training.
  • Specify local product wherever possible to minimise ‘kilometres travelled’ and transport emissions.

Office Operations

  • Demonstrate our commitment to cost effective, innovative sustainable systems and equipment through the design and operation of our own office space.
  • Use recycled and eco efficient paper, use double sided printing and copying whenever possible and only copy/print as required.
  • Coordinate packages sent by courier, use pedal bike couriers where possible.
  • Switch off computers and other equipment when not in use, use standby and energy save modes where feasible.
  • Encourage staff to use public transport, motor cycles, cycle to work or car pool to minimise transport emissions.
  • Avoid packaged products and ask suppliers to reduce packaging.
  • Use remanufactured toner cartridges.
  • Buy ‘green’ cleaning consumables.
  • Avoid disposable products.
  • Buy goods with a recycled content or reconditioned parts.
  • Use rechargeable batteries.
  • Send correspondence via email rather than hard copies in the post whenever possible.
